Our first puzzle- What’s the time?

27 04 2010

We’ll regularly be posting puzzles on our website to test your maths brains! We’ll try to make them easy enough so everyone can understand but challenging enough to make everyone have to think hard! Once you’ve worked out the answer share it and how you worked it out with the world by writing it in the comments section below!

What’s the time?

How many minutes is it until six o’clock if fifty minutes ago it was four times as many minutes past three o’clock?

If you can work it out, explain your answer in the comments section below!

So the difference between the bottom of the range (3o/c) and the top (6o/c) is 3 hours. Converts this into minutes(3×60) and we have 180 minutes.
The question gives us the sum 4x 50 x=[range difference] where x is the unknown, or 4x 50 x=180
therefore:
5x=130
x=26

The time is 26 minutes to 6.

Excellent explanation! Just to confirm your workings…

The question gives us:
4x plus 50 plus x = 180
5x = 130
x = 26

Well done! I like the way you turned what the question gave you into an equation. That takes skill!
